after searching for days now, i’ve finally found a copy of the animation. not perfectly framed, or hd. but it is a nice tease to make you want to see it in imax theaters. this scene is a must see on the silver screen.
i love the sfumato effect taken, but even more so i like excellent use chiaroscuro. the use of white silhouettes helps to enhance the story and design. i really like those segments, they are quite bold and striking. like the reflection in the water, the candle, blood splatter, the bride and my favorite, the cloak of invisibility.. lotte reiniger’s work was stolen, and enhanced.
the animation of death is so well done, i love the weightless cloth floating around death’s knobby, lanky fingers. the cloth’s texture becomes similar to smoke or some india in being dropped into clear water.
the transitions are reminiscent of terry gilliam’s work. i really like the way the 2nd brother hangs himself. there is a subtle light change and the reveal of death pulling him up the string. it reminds me a lot of kind of transitions you would see in gilliams the adventures of baron munchausen.
take a look at my previous post to see high quality frames to give you an idea of the detail that this has lost.
